The middle part of the FMX gearbox is made entirely of cast iron, so it can be easily distinguished from the rest. Even with the C4 transmission, there are some differences, not all gears fit together. The early models from 64 to 69 have an input shaft with 24 teeth (spline) and a diameter of 0.788 inches. The 1970s with the case number D0 had.
The FMX often gets a bad wrap because of its weight, and it's hard to find people that know the right way to work on them. If put together right, they're actually a solid transmission. The downsides are they're heavy, a little more difficult to get parts for than a C4 or C6, and they're expensive to work on.
Shift rod from shifter to transmission is the same length, but there are minor differences between FMX and C-4. It "should" work - as long as your C-4 is a floor shift model. You'll also need: shorter driveshaft (FMX - 51 3/32" - 4 speed/C-4 - 50 13/16") - you might be okay with this, but you'll need the 28 spline C-4 type yoke regardless.
Jun 23, 2007 · FMX has 2.40 1st gear. C4/C6 has 2.46. FMX has 1.47 2nd, C4/C6 has 1.46. Your engine won't see the difference. The AOD shares the same drivetrain and thus the same gear ratio. C4-C6 have a different gear train (Simpson) than MX/FMX/AOD/AODE/4R70W which are known as Ravineaux..

The C4 is a lot tougher in it's stock form than an AOD is in it's stock form. If you're off in the adjustment of the kickdown rod on a C4 it'll kick down a gear early or late, if you're off in adjustment of the TV cable on an AOD it'll burn up the transmission. The C4 is significantly lighter, mechanically simpler, and the performance.

FMX's are *harder* to find a *variety* of parts for than a C4. FMX's and C6's share output shaft size but the input shaft is smaller on an FMX vs C6. A C4 is even smaller..
